‘Linyamantsane’ means wild game (animals rather than birds) although the text focuses on the ubiquitous southern African springbok (‘litšephe’; ‘springbok’ in Afrikaans). This small deer loves to frolic and jump, especially during the mating season. When the Basses divide in bars 15-26 they mimic the snorting sound springbuck make: ‘pawm pawm’. The Basses are in many ways the most important voices in Mohapeloa’s songs, and he draws on their low register effectively here; indeed, every part has a wide vocal range and many leaps, perhaps in imitation of the springbok’s antics.
