‘Linyamantsane’ means wild game (referring to animals rather than birds) and the text focuses on the ubiquitous southern African springbok (‘litšephe’ in Sesotho). This small deer loves to frolic and jump, especially during the mating season, and when the Basses divide in bars 15-26 they mimic the snorting sound they make: ‘pawm pawm’. The Basses are in many ways the most important voices in Mohapeloa’s songs, and he draws on their low register very effectively here. Indeed, every part has a wide vocal range and many leaps, perhaps in imitation of the springbok’s antics.
