This contrapuntal set of variations for piano is a fantasy in the 17th- or 18th-century sense, the theme in this case being the children’s song, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’. In French, this is known as ‘Ah! vous dirai-je, maman’ (Oh, let me tell you, mother), a tune on which Mozart wrote a set of variations that Reddy very likely played as a youngster. He wrote the fantasy in about 1978 when he was a student at the Royal College of Music in London. The facsimile score of the original manuscript has some notational quirks, including changes of clef not indicated and notes scratched out and replaced, but its witty ingenuity rewards study.
