Surendran Reddy

ACE has completed the publication of 125 individual works by Durban-born composer Surendran Reddy (1962-2010) for the Reddy Performing Edition. He is perhaps best known for a crossover style that he developed in the late 1990s to 2000s that he called ‘clazz’ - a fusion of classical, jazz, African and other world musics. His early works (1970s-80s) are for piano solo/ensemble in baroque, classical, romantic or serial style. From the late 1980s he began writing jazz pieces and in the 2000s focused on piano music, sometimes large-scale and virtuosic - he himself was a virtuoso keyboardist. Surendran also wrote highly accessible, community oriented music for theatre and dance, electronic pieces, music for violin, clarinet, flute, organ and other solo instruments, and works for accompanied choir. Browse through the downloadable Catalogue (pdf) or scroll down on this page and click on any work to find out more about this highly versatile composer, who worked in many genres and styles.
