Mohapeloa wrote ‘Potla-potla Le Ja Poli’ in the early 1930s, publishing it in Morija in 1935 as song No. 8 of 32 in his first song collection, Meloli le Lithallere tsa Afrika. The title refers to a proverb about the virtue of taking one’s time and doing things properly, one of many proverbs sung in Africa to convey lessons to children about social behaviour, hence the song’s simple syllabic musical setting.
