The four solo piano pieces chaconne, song, nocturne, and hymn were written over a period of seven years during which Reddy relocation from London (where he had been a student) to Durban, South Africa (where he took up his first university teaching post). Yet he thought of them as a set and they are highly personal statements, increasingly romantic in style and often not fully notated. He may have begun chaconne as early as 1978 and completed it around 1981 while song is from 1982, both written in London. In South Africa he wrote nocturne (1983) and hymn (1984). A recording of Reddy playing them, elsewhere on this website, may be helpful for interpreters of these sometimes rather provisionally notated scores.
