In Lebili Moerane draws on a a poem by Bennett Khaketla (1913-2000), the Lesotho writer and politician several of whose poems Moerane chose to sets, sometimes using only a few verses and usually adapting them. The poem might have come from one of Khaketla’s Sesotho storybooks. There is no information available, however, about when or where the song was written. The mood of the music is rather sad and resigned, almost like a spiritual, reflecting the fatalistic tone of the poem, which laments the rise and fall of one's fortunes in love. Choirs who need help with pronouncing the Sesotho lyrics will be glad to know that a free mp3 of the spoken lyrics is available when the work is purchased.
