Mohapeloa wrote Jim, Motsoalle oa Ka in the 1930s, publishing it in Morija in 1939 as the twenty-second of 32 songs in Meloli le Lithallere tsa Afrika ka J.P. Mohapeloa: Buka ea Bobeli [African Songs and Extemporary Harmonizations by J.P. Mohapeloa: Book II]. Mohapeloa continued numbering songs in Meloli II - his second songbook - from where his previous book, Meloli I ended; thus Jim, Motsoalle oa Ka is song No. 54 in Meloli II, not No. 22. This is one of few double choruses Mohapeloa wrote - they were not common at this time, generally - and it sounds like an ‘occasion’ piece, although it is not known what the occasion was. Harmonically it is simpler than many of Mohapeloa’s other songs. The tessitura of the voices, especially Soprano 1, lies rather high, and the writing between the two choirs is quite varied, which suggests that a special choir was formed on the occasion of the first performance.
