This was originally composed as a jazz tune around 1991 for Channel 18, Reddy’s jazz-fusion band with whom he worked in Johannesburg. He rewrote the piece in 2005, writing out the piano part in full. Reddy was both a classical and jazz virtuoso, and compositions like 'afrojol' are a fusion between the two styles that he called ‘clazz’.

Surendran’s band Channel 18 is performing ‘Afrojol’ at a Lion’s Club function in Windhoek, Namibia, in 1991. The guitarist whose name we don’t know is not a regular member of the band but performed several original compositions by Surendran Reddy as well as Claude Bolling’s ‘picnic suite’ together with Channel 18 on that day.
