Research Journal Entry #1

The Andrew Mellon Moerane Critical Edition project, located in the Africa Open Institute (AOI) for Music, Research and Innovation at Stellenbosch University (SU), began in 2016 as a follow-up to my research and publication of the Mohapeloa Critical Edition (2nd ed. 2016). We launched it at a workshop in Cape Town in February 2017, where the research team met each other for the first time. This quickly became known as the M3 team, after the composer Michael Mosoeu Moerane’s initials, MMM.

The photograph above shows some of the people at our initiating workshop in Cape Town: L to R, Cara Stacey, Zayne Upton, Kgaugelo Mpyane, Ignatia Madalane, Christine Lucia. Christine Lucia is project leader, Mpho Ndebele Research Assistant, Marc Röntsch is now Post-doctoral Fellow (replacing Cara Stacey), Zayne Upton & Kgaugelo Mpyane are Masters students, and Mokale Koapeng & Ignatia Madalane are PhD students.

The photo below is from the second M3 Team Workshop in Stellenbosch and shows (L-R) Mokale Koapeng, Christine, Zayne, Igz, Cara, Kgaugelo, Mpho.

Our last two workshops were small ones, held to work on specific issues, in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively.
