Mohapeloa wrote ‘Tsohang’ in the early 1930s, publishing it in Morija in 1935 as song No. 15 of 32 in his first song collection, Meloli le lithallere tsa Afrika. It provides a companion piece to ‘Pina Ea Batšosi’ (JPM 012) and ‘Ha Bo E-sa’ (JPM 013), praising the beauty of early morning in Lesotho. It is one of many Mohapeloa songs that directly or indirectly describe what it was like to live in this country – a small and largely rural mountain kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa – in the 1930s and 40s.
