‘Molako-lako’ is about the tough life in Johannesburg’s townships, “especially knowing what type of people will survive there”, writes Mohapeloa’s brother. “In this song, the young man is talking about when he was still young, the way he was able to meander, tricking those who wanted to arrest him for breaking the laws put in place for Africans”. Dodging the South African police during the 1940s was no game, since illegal migrants or those avoiding curfews were harshly treated.
