‘Moea oa Leboea’ is is one of many songs about the violent affect of nature on the tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho and the importance of seasonal change on a the economy of its largely subsistence farming population. Rain is always a blessing: the three words on the Lesotho coat of arms are ‘khotso, pula, nala!’ (peace, rain, plenty), for Lesotho is a country where the winters are harsh and long, and drought can strike for years. The first rains usually come to Lesotho in December and renew the land for crops and animals. The song is addressed to the north wind that brings this renewed hope, thrashing the Maluti mountains and all the villages as it comes.
