Ma-Homemakers (in Sesotho) or Ingoma Ka Zenzele (in isiXhosa), is a bustling perpetuum mobile song for women’s voices about the endless round of domestic life, from an era and a region of the world – southern Africa – where women were indisputably the ‘homemakers’ in the family. Appropriately, it is for women’s voices only and has two verses, one of them Moerane’s home language, Sesotho (Ma-Homemakers) and the other in is his wife’s home language, isiXhosa. The song can be seen as a tribute to her, Mrs Beatrice Betty Moerane (née Msweli), who was Xhosa, and according to the family, she wrote the lyrics. The song also reminds us that the Zenzele movement was an important women’s organisation founded in 1940s Lesotho, the Basutoland Homemakers Association, whose activities sometimes ventured into quite risky political terrain. Epainette Mbeki, Moerane’s younger sister and the mother of former South African President, Dr Thabo Mbeki, is another outstanding example of a woman who for decades promoted women’s welfare, rights, health and self-sufficiency.

In order to help choirs learn this song, a free mp3 of the lyrics spoken by Nosipho Rapiya is downloadable when the song is purchased along with a rehearsal mp3 of the song at a slow tempo.
