In Moerane’s arrangement of I Stood On De Ribber for Solo Soprano and SATB choir, the Soprano sings throughout and the choir hums in the verses and only sings the chorus, ‘Oh, Mourner don’t you weep…’.  Moerane probably sourced it in the same book in which he found the tunes for his arrangements of Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen, Go, Tell It On The Mountains, and I Got A Home In-a Dat Rock, which was called Negro Spirituals ‘Arranged for solo voice by Harry T. Burleigh’, published in New York by Ricordi in 1917. Moerane’s setting may date from c1938 which is when Lovedale Press published his Nobody Knows arrangement. The recording by Paul Robeson on Youtube may be Burleigh’s version. In order to help choirs learn Moerane’s choral version, a free rehearsal mp3 at a slow tempo is downloadable when the song is purchased.
